Getting around in California can be difficult without a car. Many international students opt to get a driver's license during their first semester. This requires studying for the written test and behind the wheel exam.

Getting a CA Driver’s License (DMV.CA.GOV)
- Submit an online application: Driver’s License / ID Card Application
- Visit a local CA DMV office
- Bring the following ORIGINAL documents (no copies) to your written test appointment
- When you apply for a driver's license at your local DMV, make sure to bring original copies of the following documents:
- All signed versions of your Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status.”
- A valid passport and your most recent student visa (Please note that you do not need a visa if you are from a visa-exempt country, such as Canada or Bermuda).
- Proof of residence. This varies from state to state and you should check your local DMV’s website to ensure you understand what is needed to fulfill this requirement.
- If you are on optional practical training, bring your Form I-766, “Employment Authorization Document.”
- Take the CA DMV Knowledge test
- Pass a road test

Riding the Bus (OCTA) - Community College Pass
The OCTA Community College Pass Program provides all Orange County community college
students with free travel on the OC Bus service to school, work or fun on safe, clean
and reliable buses.
