Public works professionals make their living on highways, worksites, parks and power lines. They serve their communities every day, responding to natural disasters and creating future-critical infrastructure. It's an active, energetic career path, bearing ever-expanding opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

Santiago Canyon College's Public Works department prepares our community's unsung action heroes for rock-solid careers in construction, maintenance, equipment operation, equipment inspection, and dozens of other fields related to government and business infrastructure. The curriculum combines the hands-on with the high-tech, covering everything from planning to project management and implementation, using the latest industry tools.
When it comes to demand, Public Works careers are among the most consistent, with virtually every job classification growing or holding steady, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. SCC grads go on to high-paying careers as construction workers and supervisors, maintenance professionals, heavy equipment operators, water quality inspectors, technicians, and more.
Santiago Canyon College's Public Works department is also home to the Power Lineman: Apprenticeship program, which earned prestigious, Gold Star recognition from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office in 2018. Students in this program found industry-relevant employment at a 100-percent rate, bolstering their annual earnings by an average of 70%.
