ORANGE, Calif. - Santiago Canyon College (SCC) welcomed nearly 500 attendees to Neon Night 2026 on May 14, transforming the SCC Gymnasium into a vibrant celebration of esports, student engagement, and community connection. The event utilized the gym lobby, outdoor spaces, and both basketball courts to create an immersive experience for students, families, local high schools, faculty, staff, and community partners.
Neon Night 2026 featured a 40-foot main stage, live broadcast production, free-play gaming stations, complimentary food, a multi-program resource alley, and a 64-player Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament organized entirely by SCC Esports student leadership.
Throughout the evening, SCC esports teams competed live on stage against regional partners from Fullerton College and Norco College in Marvel Rivals and Valorant. La Quinta High School also joined SCC students for a featured League of Legends exhibition match, highlighting the strong connections between SCC and local K-12 partners.
One of the evening's standout attractions was the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, which drew competitors from across Southern California, including students from Katella High School and El Modena High School, several of whom placed in the tournament's top 16 bracket. The competition also featured nationally ranked players who regularly compete in Las Vegas esports events.
Attendees and competitors praised the tournament's professional atmosphere and production quality, with many comparing the experience to events hosted at the HyperX Arena at the Luxor in Las Vegas. The tournament marked a major milestone for SCC Esports students, whose grassroots tournaments began in the college's esports lab and steadily grew throughout the academic year before culminating at Neon Night.
In addition to gaming competition, Neon Night showcased SCC's commitment to student success and community engagement. Campus programs and departments connected with attendees through resource tables and outreach activities, providing information about student services, academic pathways, and involvement opportunities. Families and prospective students also learned more about SCC's dual enrollment offerings and esports program opportunities.
The event's vibrant atmosphere incorporated AAPI-inspired themes, colorful visuals, and collaborative programming designed to bring together students and the broader community under a shared celebration of culture, creativity, and innovation.
"We look forward to building a bigger and better Neon Night for Spring 2027, coming up with more ways to bring the community together to celebrate the students, culture, and excitement of Esports," said Rosan Uma, head coach of SCC Esports.
