History is everywhere, all the time. You are making it right now. From the world's first civilizations to the headlines of this morning, the Department of History at SCC teaches students to read the evidence, weigh the argument, and understand how change happens: skills no era has needed more than ours.
Santiago Canyon College offers the Associate of Arts for Transfer (AA-T) in History, alongside a wide range of courses that fulfill general education and area-specific requirements for students across every program at the college.
The AA-T in History asks students to think critically about themselves, their cultural heritage, social and economic process, and national and international affairs, all within the context of change over time. Students who complete the AA-T and meet CSU admission requirements, including the minimum GPA, are guaranteed admission to the California State University system (though not necessarily to a particular campus or program) to pursue a Bachelors degree in History or a related field. Our students also transfer to the University of California system and to private colleges and universities.
Every course in the department is a college-credit course grounded in the discipline's core practices: reading varied texts, examining diverse sources, writing analytically, citing evidence, and understanding the many forces and peoples who have shaped change across regions, communities, states, and cultures. All work in our courses is original and authentic: produced by the student, for the student.

All courses in the department are college credit courses. History is a discipline which emphasizes learning in reading various texts, examining diverse sources, writing in an analytic fashion, citing sources, and understanding the many forces and peoples who have shaped change over time across regions, communities, states, and cultures. All courses in the Department of History require that students produce original, authentic work. The use of any form of artificial intelligence (AI) is prohibited in student work in courses for the Department of History. The protocols concerning this are laid out in the syllabus for each individual course. All courses, even asynchronous online courses, in the Department of History may require that students appear in person on campus if the instructor of that course deems it necessary. The circumstances in which this may occur are laid out in the syllabus for each individual course. The Department of History offers a range of courses on diverse topics representing the breadth of the human experience across space and time. Some courses are not offered every semester, but most courses are offered at least once over a two-year cycle. If you are considering a History major and wish to know when a course might be offered, please do not hesitate to inquire with the Department Chair.
