Manipulative Skills for Older Adults

Abstract Collage: An introductory level class intothe practice of Abstract Art making through the use of collage. Students will learn about strategies for making abstract art, history of 20th century abstraction, color theory basics, and experience the process of making a body of work.

Advance Watercolor Painting: The course concentrates on improvement of motor skills and decision making through utilization of a variety of art media and techniques. Provides opportunities for analysis and decision-making skills while exercising basic manipulative skills. 

Basic Drawing: Teach beginners different styles of drawings as well as different techniques.

Basic Drawing and Sketching: The course concentrates on improvement of motor skills and decision making through utilization of a variety of art media and techniques. Provides opportunities for analysis and decision-making skills while exercising basic manipulative skills. 

Basic Sewing: Basic terminology, skills and sewing order will be covered. With understanding the sewing order, you will be able to tackle zippers, hardware, trim, buttons, buttonholes, gathering, strap, and casings while sewing item is lying flat. Starting with a small project and simple tote or choose a project that incorporates these sewing techniques. You will improve your sewing machine skills, understand pattern instructions, and sew more efficiently. Bring your fabric, thread, sewing supplies, and working sewing machine or use the SCC computerized machines.

Basic Watercolor: The course concentrates on improvement of motor skills and decision making through utilization of a variety of art media and techniques. Provides opportunities for analysis and decision making skills while exercising basic manipulative skills. 

Basic Water Media Painting: The course concentrates on improvement of motor skills and decision making through utilization of a variety of art media and techniques. Provides opportunities for analysis and decision-making skills while exercising basic manipulative skills.

Beginning Drawing: Students will learn how to draw different subjects from portraits to still life drawing, and also teach work on drawing different styles.  In this class, we work with different mediums such as graphite, charcoal, and color pencil.

Butterflies and Color Harmony: Butterflies are beautiful for their color combinations. Students will learn how to mix colors and will analyze color combinations for each painting.

Chalk Pastel: Explore the vibrant world of chalk pastel art in this engaging and hands-on course. Designed for artists of all skill levels, this course will introduce you to the versatile medium of chalk pastels and teach you various techniques to create stunning works of art. Throughout the course, you will learn how to blend colors, create texture, and manipulate light and shadow to bring your artwork to life. From landscapes and still lifes to portraits and abstract compositions, you will have the opportunity to experiment with different subjects and styles, allowing you to develop your own unique artistic voice. Unleash your creativity and produce beautiful chalk pastel masterpieces. Whether you're a beginner looking to explore a new medium or an experienced artist seeking to refine your skills, this course offers something for everyone.

Creative Painting: We copy paintings from realistic painting to impressionistic and modern art.  I also teach students all the techniques that they need to use in their painting in this class.

Creative Quilting: Learn the newest methods in creative quilting techniques to design and sew by hand or machine that you love to gift or to keep. You will be able to choose your own creative quilted project or seasonal, while learning a new or refreshed techniques. Some ideas would be to use improv, landscape, portrait, thread painting, t shirt etc. that doesn’t focus on squares and triangles. Bring your fabric, thread, sewing/quilting supplies, and working sewing machine or use the SCC computerized machines.

Creative Textiles: Get creative with this new course, by using a mixed media approach exploring elements of dye techniques such as Shibori and tie dye  with printing methods combining stamping, stenciling and block printing with creative embroidery and applique techniques. Learn to add embellishments to create your own original wall hanging , cushion cover or update a denim jacket or t-shirt for a one-of-a-kind designer look. It is a great companion class if you to learn how to create designs on fabrics , and want to elevate and personalize your sewing, quilting or embroidery projects.

Drawing Face: Students will learn face proportions, drawing face in 3D from photograph, and paint with oil or acrylic on canvas following instructions step-by-step.

Drawing With Pastels: I teach drawing different subjects with soft pastel in this class.

Fabric Embellishing: Fabric Embellishing – learn how to update apparel, quilts or fabric with surface embellishing techniques such as embroidery, beading, and fabric manipulation such as pin-tucking, bias tape, smocking, and more.

Hand Sewing Basics: Don’t have a sewing machine?  No problem.  By mastering just a few basic hand sewing stitches and supplies, you’ll unlock the ability to hand sew.  You’ll learn how to sew seams and hem with 6 stitches and which techniques work best for different purposes. Even if you have a sewing machine, there are times when hand sewing is better to give you the results you want.  

Intro to Abstract Art: I teach students different styles to paint abstract from their own creativity. 

Life Drawing: Figure Drawing is a fundamental course designed to develop the student's ability to observe and render the human form accurately. Through a series of exercises, students will explore various techniques and concepts essential for representing the figure in both traditional and contemporary approaches. Emphasis will be placed on understanding anatomy, proportion, gesture, and expression. Learning to trust and honor the quirks and individuality of perception is the key to understanding illustration. A better understanding of anatomy and gesture drawing through figure study can build your illustration capabilities. Sketching real figures will help you develop your skills as a sketch artist, illustrator, and fine artist.

Modern Quilting: Learn the skills necessary to design and sew a modern quilting project. Low volume fabrics (whites, grays) are used in modern quilting. Gain experience with choosing fabrics, patterns, cutting, sewing, piecing, borders, sashing, appliqué, batting and quilting a project of choice for the semester. The project can be anything if the “quilting” technique is used.

Never Have I Ever Painted: Students will follow step-by-step painting techniques, including using stencils to create art without drawing skills. They will also use Cricut machines and Canva to bring their creations to life, designing seamless patterns on mugs, kitchen items, and wearables. If students can’t join live, watch video recordings at your convenience. The Canvas modules include lectures and inspiring works from fellow students. (This beginner-friendly class ends with a final art exhibit, transforming you into an overnight artist.)

Painting Birds in 3D: Students will learn how to paint birds using light and dark and interpret photographs in paintings
Painting Flowers: Students will paint flowers in various color gamma and learn how to reflect the flowers' "personality" in oil or acrylic.

Painting Postimpressionistic: Students will explore Postimpressionism in Art History and will learn how to interpret their paintings in Postimpressionistic style.

Painting Ships in the Ocean: Students will learn about Painting reflection in the water, Ocean in different conditions, and paint ships of different structure.

Portraits & Figures in Drawing: The course concentrates on improvement of motor skills and decision making through utilization of a variety of art media and techniques. Provides opportunities for analysis and decision-making skills while exercising basic manipulative skills.

Quilting: Learn or refresh quilting terminology and skills with like-minded students. Gain experience with choosing fabrics, patterns, cutting, sewing, piecing, borders, sashing, appliqué, batting and quilting a project of choice for the semester. Bring your fabric, thread, sewing/quilting supplies, and working sewing machine or use the SCC computerized machines.

Quilting and Patchwork: The intention of this course is to introduce the student to contemporary hand quilting and patchwork methods including applique, free form sewing, piecing, color and composition, and various stitch and seam techniques. This course focuses on explorations using hand-sewn quilting techniques. 

Sewing 101: The Sewing 101 Course is designed for complete beginners & people who have sewn in the past but need a refresher and want to learn the basics of sewing. You will develop essential skills, understand various sewing techniques, use supplies, and complete a simple project. or projects to build confidence and proficiency.

Sewing Fundamentals: Fundamental skills of sewing techniques and machine use. Learn to understand commercial and internet pdf pattern directions. Design, choose fabric, layout, prep work, fit and alterations will be covered. Create garment or accessory item that fit your unique style. Bring your own fabric, thread, sewing supplies, and working sewing machine or use the SCC computerized machines.

Studio Art:

Textile Dye and Print Class: Textile Dye and Print – learn fabric dyeing and printing techniques such as block printing, shibori dye, and more. Learn how to use common household items to create interesting designs on old and new garments or fabrics. Perfect for apparel and quilting students looking to design their own fabrics.

Textiles: Emphasis on learning and selection of the newest textiles, trends, and forecasts for your choice of sewing project while improving your skills on the sewing machine. Sustainability and natural fabrics will be covered. Bring your fabric, thread, sewing supplies, and working sewing machine or use the SCC computerized machines.

Upcycle Fashion: How to deconstruct a garment or accessory, reassemble or alter it using key parts of the item. Choose from several choices of upcycled projects that will be geared to your experience/skill level. Take a before and after picture to share what has been accomplished. The goal is to learn that with a little work and creativity you can make something new from something old. Bring your fabric, trims, closures, thread, sewing supplies, and working sewing machine or use the SCC computerized machines. *Some projects are no sew.

Weaving: The intention of this course is to introduce the student to the craft of hand weaving exploring various weaving processes including tapestry weaving and basket weaving. The students will gain knowledge of construction of a loom, creation of yarn, and various methods of fabric construction using natural and alternative materials.

Watercolor With Markers: Throughout this course, students will learn essential techniques to get started and become more confident with this medium. Experience the modern evolution of watercolor painting with Watercolor with Markers course. This beautiful and versatile medium allows for vibrant colors and delicate washes, letting students express themselves in new and exciting ways.
