Description:
Visit The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens at a spectacular time of year – when the gardens are typically in full bloom! Originally the private estate of railroad magnate Henry Huntington, The Huntington features a magnificent collection of rare books, manuscripts, and famous European and American art including Gainsborough’s “The Blue Boy,” Mary Cassatt’s “Breakfast in Bed,” a Gutenberg Bible, an illuminated manuscript of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, and a First Folio edition of Shakespeare. The European art is on display in Huntington’s Beaux-Arts mansion – one of the great Gilded Age residences of America. Spread across 120 acres and featuring over 15,000 kinds of plants from around the world, the gardens are landscaped into a series of 12 specialized, themed gardens including the popular Rose Garden, Japanese Garden and Chinese Garden. On display for a limited time is the special exhibition, Lifelines/Timelines which explores the march of time by comparing the age of selected California juniper bonsai alongside benchmarks in the institution's 100-year history along with significant pieces on view in the library and art galleries. Which line of a tree's growth corresponds to the publication of Shakespeare's First Folio in 1623? How does its age relate to the creation of Thomas Gainsborough's masterpiece, “The Blue Boy,” painted in 1770? Each of the exhibition's five bonsai installations, located at gallery entrances, include an illustrated timeline, interactive elements, and other interpretive materials providing an interdisciplinary approach that only The Huntington could offer and presenting an entirely new perspective on The Huntington's holding. Enjoy approximately five hours at your leisure to explore the gardens, art galleries, gift-shop and visitor center with lunch on your own at the various eateries. Suggested: walking shoes.
