Fall 2018 Accomplishments
In the past fall term, the club participated in community and campus projects, including:
Dia de Los Muertos Military Memorial Table
During the campus-wide celebration of Dia De Los Muertos, the club created an offrenda (a traditional Dia De Los Muertos alter) to honor service members that have passed. The offrenda contained photos, favorite snacks and drinks of family and friends as well as military style decorations.
Vet Net Ally Panel
Members of the club participated in a panel during an important training called Vet Net Ally. The training was provided to SCC faculty and staff as an overview of military culture and specific challenges that veteran students face. The participating panel provided invaluable insight into life as a veteran student at SCC.
Veterans Day Celebration
This year, the veterans club took an active role is creating the Veterans Day Celebration on campus. Volunteers from the club helped setting up the information booths and the Library's display of the 100th Anniversary of the End of WWI. They also engaged with students, faculty and staff on campus - sharing their stories and their experiences at SCC. During the event, they kicked off their fundraiser for Care Packages.
Care Packages For Troops
The club raised funds and collected donations to send care packages to deployed troops. A few veteran students in the club are still connected to friends serving on active duty overseas.
Field of Valor
The Field of Valor is hosted by the Community Foundation of Orange to honor veterans and service members in the city of Orange. A stunning display of 1,776 American flags are set up annually in Handy Park. The Veterans Club volunteered with Dr. John Hernandez, President of SCC, and Joseph Alonzo, Director of Student Equity, to set up the flags in the field.
