Santiago Canyon College to Host Immigration Scholar, Dr. Allan Colbern on Monday, April 3



Santiago Canyon College (SCC) will host Immigration in the United States: Past, Present and Future with Dr. Allan Colbern. The focus of this lecture is the issue of immigration in the United States. Dr. Colbern will go through the history of immigration, analyze the current state of immigration in the U.S. and compare the differences of immigration legislation from state to state; and where he sees the future of immigration in the United States.


Dr. Allan Colbern is a scholar who focuses on the issues of immigration. Some broader focuses include, American political development, immigration policy, racial politics, social movements, federalism, and citizenship. He received his PhD and Master of Arts in political science from University of California, Riverside. And he received his bachelor’s in political science and history from University of California, Berkley. He is currently working to complete his manuscript, Today’s Runaway Slaves: Unauthorized Immigrants in a Federalist Framework.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking without a permit will be cited. Visitors can purchase a $2 daily parking permit allowing parking in any lot for the day.


Explore the historical-political development of state sanctuary laws and engage in long-standing debates over American federalism, immigration law, civil rights, and racial politics. Dr. Colbern analyzes the historical importance of features in American Federalism that protect runaway slaves (1780-1860), Central American Refugees (1979-1997), and undocumented immigrants (2000-present) from re-enslavement and deportation.
