Orange - Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) has named Maggie Cordero, JD, as director of special programs/Upward Bound (Math and Science) at Santiago Canyon College (SCC).
In this role, Cordero is responsible for the operations of the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) project. Through a federally funded grant, SCC has partnered with local high schools to work with students who would benefit from strengthening their mathematics and science skills. By working closely with high school administration and faculty, the director will identify cohorts of high school students to participate in the program. Her responsibilities include planning seminars, training activities, workshops, orientations, organizing recognition events, as well as providing documentation for the grant against stated objectives.
Cordero has more than seven years experience in California community colleges. Prior to joining RSCCD, she served as director of Pathways Program and coordinator of Project HOPE at Cerritos Community College (CCC). The Pathways Programs strive to create educational and career pathways for in and out of school youth, and young adults by providing a seamless transition from secondary to post-secondary education, and the skilled workforce. Project HOPE provides students of diverse backgrounds with the tools to succeed in pursuit of their educational goals in healthcare or science. Cordero wrote, applied for more than $1 million of grants that she helped implement while in that role.
Previously, she served as director of adult education and diversity programs at CCC. In that role, she managed non-credit instructional programs, including English as a Second Language, General Education Development (GED), occupational preparation, citizenship, and more. Prior to that, she was an adjunct faculty member at CCC where she taught the “Legal Environment of Business” course.
Cordero earned a Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law and a B.S. in public policy and management with a minor in sociology from the University of Southern California.
