Helping First-Year Students Navigate the Path to Success
At Santiago Canyon College (SCC), first-year students are encouraged to utilize the First Year Support Center (FYSC). The FYSC, located in E307, offers new SCC students resources, workshops, and tips for success.
Many of these resources and/or workshops include:
- Scholarship assistance
- California Dream Act assistance
- Applying for FAFSA
- Aid in transferring to UC’s and CSU’s
- Enhancing study and time management skills
- Enrolling in classes
FYSC provides new students with any and all available resources that ensure students will maximize their success. Staff will also assist in how to use WedAdvisor, how to add a class, which papers to fill out for FAFSA, or even find a bus route to ensure students will make it to campus. Students can also stop by FYSC if they need to use a computer, print a few papers, or are longing for a quiet study space.
FYSC Coordinator Cindy Partida says, “We want to help new students understand the college skill set and attitude needed to succeed. We are here to help them navigate the college system, ultimately setting them up for success.”
New students are introduced to FYSC during the New Student Orientation, and are encouraged to drop by at any time for any question they have or advice they might want. A first-year support group will soon be offered for new students. This group will allow students to interact and share stories, resources, and tips with one another.
The FYSC is located in E307 on the third floor of the Student Services building. Office hours are:
- Monday 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
- Tuesday 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
- Wednesday 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
- Thursday 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
- Friday 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
