More than Words: American Sign Language @ SCC

If you've been paying attention to social media, then you know that the day of the “celebrity Sign Language interpreter" is here! Whether they're signing a high-profile speech for the mayor of New York City, or participating in a rap battle on late-night TV, ASL interpreters are more popular and more in demand than ever!

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the need for qualified ASL interpreters is growing “much faster than average" when compared to all other occupations. In fact, in California, occupational growth in this sector is expected to reach 20% by 2026, adding an average of 1,220 new jobs every year. At the highest end, interpreters can make upwards of $115,000 dollars per year.

To meet this growing need, SCC's Certificate of Achievement in ASL gives students the linguistic competency they need to enter a formal interpreter training program. Successful graduates will be able to use ASL for personal communication and have an introductory understanding of the Deaf community and the role that interpreting plays within it.

Interested students may also take advantage of SCC's state-of-the-art language lab, which provides students of Spanish, Italian, French, and American Sign Language a variety of directed learning activities to enhance and supplement their language learning experience.

Whether you're looking to be the next Sign Language sensation, or just want to make a difference in the lives of people around you, a certificate in ASL from SCC will give you the hands-on education you need to find work in this rapidly growing field.
