Thanks to the generous support of the community, scholarship donors, alumni, faculty and staff; the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Foundation and Scholarship Program awarded over $150,000 in student scholarships during the 2013-2014 school year. These scholarships benefited 275 continuing and transferring SCC students, as well as 23 non-credit students.
For the upcoming academic year (2014-2015), the Scholarship Program Office received 190 scholarship applications for awards that ranged from $100 to $1,500. On May 22, 2014, the 15th Annual Scholarship Ceremony was held at Strenger Plaza when 166 scholarships totaling $90,950 were awarded to transferring and continuing students. In addition, 20 scholarships for students from the Division of Continuing Education were presented with awards totaling $3,250.
The transferring recipients are ready to begin their studies at four-year universities, such as: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California State University, Fullerton, California State University, Long Beach, Chapman University, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Irvine, University of California, Los Angeles, University of California, San Diego, and University of Pennsylvania.
Among these deserving recipients is 23-year-old Matthew Montgomery, a student veteran, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2009 to 2013. Montgomery, a chemistry/mathematics major with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.78, has set his sights on becoming a chemical engineer and transferring to the University of California, Berkeley. He was happy to be awarded two scholarships – the Southern California Edison STEM Scholarship for $500 and the Morton J. Opittek Memorial Veterans Scholarship for $1,000.
“I am grateful for these scholarships right now because education is expensive. I enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment. These awards are a testament to how hard I am working,” Montgomery said.
