Martin Dugard, author of Chasing Lance (Little, Brown, 2005) is a longtime devotee of the Tour de France, and attended his first Tour in 1999 as a guest of three-time champion Greg LeMond. That was also the year that Lance won the first of his seven consecutive Tour victories.

Dugard was present as LeMond and Armstrong huddled together before the crucial Sestriere stage, during which Armstrong would go on to claim the yellow jersey. It was, literally the moment when the past and future of United States cycling converged. Since then, Dugard has gone on to cover five of the last eight Tours, including Armstrong's grand finale in 2005.

Dugard has written dispatches on cycling and endurance sports that have appeared in Sports Illustrated, Runner's World, Outside, Men's Journal, Esquire, and many others. He is also the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Voyage of Columbus (Little, Brown, 2005), Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone (Doubleday, 2003), Farther Than Any Man: The Rise and Fall of Captain James Cook (Pocket Books, 2001), Knockdown (Pocket Books, 1999), and Surviving the Toughest Race on Earth (McGraw-Hill, 1998).

Dugard, who is also something of an adventurer, has completed the two-week Raid Gauloises adventure race; sailed on a tall ship across the Mediterranean; and spent time in an African prison while researching one of his books.

On a miscellaneous note, Dugard lived for six weeks on the Malaysian island of Palau Tiga during the filming of the television show Survivor. This became the subject of the bestselling Survivor: The Ultimate Game, co-written with series producer Mark Burnett.

Dugard is also the co-holder of the around the world speed record, having flown from New York to New York in 31 hours and 28 minutes aboard an Air France Concorde in 1996.

Martin Dugard lives in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, with his wife and three sons.
