SCC Professor is Teacher of the Year

Orange—Santiago Canyon College professor Maureen Roe was surprised Tuesday morning to learn that she had been chosen as the 2011 Orange County community college Teacher of the Year and a semi-finalist for the 2011 Orange County Teacher of the Year.

Award officials briefly interrupted a freshman English class to congratulate Roe. To the cheers of students, representatives from the Orange County Department of Education, Disneyland Resort in California, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, Orange County Register Communications, and the Dr. James Hines Foundation presented Roe with her award.

Roe’s first thought when the group came into her classroom was that there was a mistake. About a week ago, she received a letter thanking her for her application, but that she hadn’t been chosen.

The letter had been sent by accident.

“I was in shock, utter shock,” Roe said. “I thought they must be in the wrong room.”

Roe has been teaching at SCC since 1995, full-time since 2000. She said the award reaffirmed that she made the right choice in life. “I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, and how wonderful to get this confirmation.”

"It’s incredibly humbling,” Roe said. “I know many who do it as well as I do, especially at this college.”

Roe said the best part of teaching comes after the class is finished. “I’ll meet a student—sometimes much—later in life, and I find out how they’ve used what we’ve studied and learned,” she said. “It goes way beyond one semester.”

The 2011 Orange County Teacher of the Year will be announced at a dinner and ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in November 2010.

Past community college Teachers of the Year and semi-finalists for the Orange County Teacher of the Year from SCC were Marcelo Pimental of the Philosophy Department in 2005 and Dr. Cari Cannon of the Psychology Department in 2009.

Santiago Canyon College is a public community college of Rancho Santiago Community College District, serving the residents of Anaheim Hills, Orange, Tustin and Villa Park. The college provides education for academic transfer and careers, courses for personal and professional development, and customized training for business and industry.
