The Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Forensics Team is back and going strong! Prior to the recession and ensuing budget cuts, the SCC team had been nationally recognized in individual events, Lincoln-Douglas debate, parliamentary debate and Reader’s Theater.
At SCC, students can participate in the following areas of emphasis:
- oral interpretation of literature
- platform speaking
- limited preparation
In 2013-2104, the 20-member forensics team competed at regional tournaments, including the Warm-Up Tournament at El Camino College; the Fall Championships at California State University, Long Beach; an invitational tournament at Pasadena City College; and the Spring Championships at Moorpark College. The team also competed at the State Championships held in Concord, California.
The team won numerous medals and awards for its work during the year. The gold medal honorees include Anthony Ball, Christopher Marquez, Tati Memea, Gera Rangel, Danny Saldivar, and Spencer Wianeki. Silver medalists include Peter Elias, Alexandra Skinner, and Christian Torres. Bronze medal honors at the State Championships went to Joe Kahn and Will Lobato. First place honors went to Danielle Bui, Wes Levine, and Pamela Tomashek.
The SCC Foundation provided $2,300 for entry fees, transportation and lodging enabling the team to participate in the State Championships.
