14 Athletes Qualify for Regionals
Santa Ana - On Friday, April 26th, the Santiago Canyon Track & Field Teams closed out their 2013 regular season by competing in the Orange Empire Conference Championships hosted at Santa Ana College.
The Lady Hawks were led by the freshmen trio of Lindsey Meng, Chloe Reeves, and Harneet Bhullar. Meng placed 2nd in the 800 Meters with a School Record time of 2:20.83 and 4th in the Steeplechase (12:24.33). Reeves placed 3rd in the Steeplechase with a time of 12:11.36 (2nd fastest time in school history). Bhullar finished 6th in the 200 Meter Dash (producing a School Record time of 25.52 seconds) and 5th in the 100 Meter Dash (2nd fastest time in school history at 12.77 seconds). The women's team defeated the Lady Dons of Santa Ana College to finish 6th in the final conference standings.
The men's team was led by the stellar field event performances of freshman jumper Divonte Beale and sophomore thrower Daniel Jones. Beale was the 2013 Orange Empire Conference Champion in the Triple Jump with a School Record performance of 46 feet 1.5 inches. Jones placed 2nd in the Shot Put (School Record mark of 49 feet 10.5 inches) and 4th in the Discus (140 feet 3 inches). Other individual standouts for the Hawks included Ibrahim Al-Arnous (4th place in 100 Meter dash with a School Record time of 10.79 seconds) and Charles Harmon (4th place in the 400 Meters with a a School Record time of 48.20 seconds). Al-Arnous and Harmon also combined with Aaron Mendez and John Siegel to produce a new School Record in the men's 4x100m Relay (42.58 seconds). The men's team defeated the Rustlers of Golden West College to finish 5th in the final conference standings.
All combined, the Hawks men's and women's track & field teams produced 6 SCC School Records in the meet and qualified 14 student-athletes for advancement into this week's Southern California Regional meet which is being hosted at Antelope Valley College. |

New School Records Set
Mission Viejo, CA - On Friday, March 22nd, the SCC Track & Field Teams competed in a double dual meet against Orange Coast College and host Saddleback College.
The Lady Hawks earned their first conference win of the season by defeating the Lady Gauchos of Saddleback by a score of 76-to-51. The Lady Hawks victory was solidified by the 1st place finishes of Chloe Reeves (100 Meter Hurdles & High Jump), Lindsey Meng (800 Meters), Harneet Bhullar (Long Jump), Kimberly Torres (400 Meters), and Terra Moore (Javelin). In their other contest, the Lady Hawks came up short against Orange Coast as the Pirates walked away with a comfortable 118-to-30 victory. In that contest, Star Bravo and Harneet Bhullar teamed-up to lead the Lady Hawks scorers with their 1st-through-2nd place sweeps of both the 100 Meter and 200 Meter sprint events.
On the men's side, the Hawks walked away with a pair of tough losses as Orange Coast won by a score of 98-to-56 and Saddleback won by a score of 97-to-57. However, the Hawks were able to display some truly dominant performances in the Sprint events as they placed 1st overall in the 100 Meters (Ibrahim Al-Arnous), 1st and 2nd overall in the 400 Meters (Charles Harmon & Aaron Mendez), and then swept 1st-through-3rd overall in the 200 Meters (Harmon, Mendez, and Al-Arnous racing together in that event). They also placed 1st overall in both the 4x100 Meter and 4x400 Meter Sprint Relays – breaking the SCC School Records in both those relay events. It was a record-setting day for freshman sprinter Charles "Chaz" Harmon as he set individual School Records in both the 200 Meters (21.66 seconds) and the 400 Meters (48.89 seconds), and also ran as the anchor leg on both the School Record relay squads! Sophomore thrower and team captain Daniel Jones also contributed to the record-setting day as he established new School Record marks in both the Shot Put (49 feet 3.5 inches) and Hammer Throw (150 feet 6 inches). |
